Giuseppe Meazza

Hey, not sure if you’ve already featured this guy but just in case I thought I’d submit him anyway.

Now we all know the San Siro stadium in Milan, Italy; but how many know that it’s actually called “Il Estadio de Giuseppe San Meazza” after the great Giuseppe Meazza.

Giuseppe was Internazionale and Italia’s star man in the early ’30s and shone for the Azzurri in their World Cup wins in 1934 and 1938.

To me Meazza personifies the chivalry of early football and is in stark contrast to the celebrity footballers of today. His grace and elegance on and off the field leaves him as a reminder of a bygone era when football was a gentleman’s game. He was in fact so graceful on the pitch that he earned a modelling contract with Dolce and Gabbana which elevated his family from the poverty he grew up in.

So here’s to a footballing great and a style icon, Giuseppe Meazza.
